Practice Areas
Last week I had to make some decisions about which practice areas I'd like to be exposed to this summer at my firm. Because I'm only a half summer, I'll only rotate through three groups. We were asked to rank our top five choices, but I'm hoping I get my top three. My choices are mostly corporate law areas, but I've mixed in a few different choices.
I knew before law school that I wanted to practice corporate law. However, last year I developed a brief love of land use law. After taking several land use classes this year, I discovered that while I find portions of it interesting, I'm not at all interested in practicing in that area. Hence, I've returned to my fascination with corporate law. I'm taking Corporations and Business Organizations this semeseter, and I've got Securities Regulation and International Securities Regulation on tap for next semester.
I also received an externship with the General Counsel for the big hospital here in town for the fall, so I've added health care to the mix. I'm most interested in the corporate and compliance side of health care though.
I feel like I'm making some major life choices here. I know it's difficult, if not impossible, to change practice areas once you're practicing, so I feel like I'm making some major decisions now.
On tap for this week are two interviews for the second half of my summer, both dealing with sports law. I've always been interested in sports law, but because it is a very difficult field to break into, I had all but given up. Now I'm interviewing with a large sports management firm and a professional sports league. The interview with the sports management firm seems to be a mere formality, but the other interview is for one spot for which they're interviewing several candidates. I expect that by this time next weekend I'll know which I'll be spending the second half of my summer interning with. We'll all just have to wait to find out...
