My First Cite Checking Assignment
Tonight marked my first cite checking assignment for one of the two journals of which I am a member. I'm amazed at how someone who graduated within the past few years can make at least one citation error in every single footnote. I can cut some slack for the folks who have been out practicing for awhile and have missed the newer editions of the Bluebook. I can even forgive those who haven't made the move from the 17th to 18th edition. However, I cannot fathom how someone who graduated fairly recently could consistently cite in a manner that is unrecognized by either version!
Really, I have it figured out. As a practicing attorney, this person either is, or thinks they are, more important than me...that their time is more valuable...that this is how I pay my dues as a law student. They don't have time to busy themselves with proper citation. No, let the law student grunt and groan over it instead. That's fine. I see how it is.
No animosity here whatsoever though, despite how it may sound. If everyone cited perfectly, I'd be out of a job (or journal membership at least).
